Air Navigation & Aerodrome Division
The role of the Air Navigation & Aerodrome Division is to handle administration and oversight of air navigation, aerodromes, and aviation security in Iceland. Included here are issues such as granting of certificates, authorisations, and designation of air navigation service providers. The Division also provides advice in the preparation of the national transport plan and related projects, and actively participates in the implementation and development of regulations and requirements.
Aerodromes include international aerodromes as well as general aerodromes and landing strips. Air navigation services consist of air traffic services; meteorological services; aeronautical information services; and communication-, navigation-, and surveillance services.
The Air Navigation and Aerodrome Division is a new division within the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration (ICAA). The Division was established in the wake of great changes which have taken place in this field in Iceland as well as internationally, where the service role (of the Icelandic state) has been separated from administration and supervisory roles. This formally took place in Iceland on 1.1.2007, with amendments to acts.
The requirements which Icelandic air navigation and aerodromes abide by can in large part be traced to the European Community, as Iceland is a member of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) and a part of the Single European Sky (SES) through the agreement on the European Economic Area. Requirements which aerodromes and aviation security abide by have been coordinated with requirements of the European Union and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) which Iceland is a member of.
International communication and cooperation in relation to these issues is a large part of the operations of the Division.
The Air Navigation & Aerodrome Division is divided into two sections; the Air Navigation Section and the Aerodrome and Security Section. A group of specialists with varied backgrounds, education, and experience work within the Division.
